Did You Know?

The word 'shire' means something which has been shorn off, or separated. The district of Gloucester was shorn off from the great territory of the Mercians, and became Gloucestershire.

Did You Know?

The nickname 'Unready' is derived from the word 'un-raed' which meant 'lack of council' or 'ill-advised'. It seems that 'King Ethelred the Unready' was either easily persuaded or made bad decisions, or both!

Did You Know?

Mercia was originally an Anglo-Saxon kingdom centred on the valley of the River Trent in what is now the Midlands. By 1007 it was a province of Saxon England.

Do Your Homework

If you are planning in setting up any type of business in Gloucestershire, as in any county, the most important thing is to do your homework first.

Whatever type of business you are thinking of launching, from gloucester dentists, florists or a petrol station, make sure that you have done adequate research before you go into business or you could find yourself pretty quickly going out of business!

Firstly and crucially, make sure there is a market. It sounds basic but it is surprising how many people set up a business without adequate research beforehand to check that there is going to be a thriving market. This is an integral part of your business plan so make sure that you are going to have enough customers for a healthy business.

Secondly check out the competition – it is of course easier to thrive in a sector for which there is a requirement but no competition; but it is equally possible to run a profitable business with competition at hand. See what their strengths and their weaknesses are and benefit from this to improve your own business.

Local pricing research is also a must. Again, it is linked to your business plan as ultimately the prices you will be able to command dictate the profits you will make. If you price yourself out of the market your business will not last long!
